St. Isidore to the Rescue

July 15, 2016 by cynelder@me.com

We live in a farming community.  Jimmy’s favorite saint is St. Isidore.  He is the patron saint of farmers and rural life.  We actually have a statue of him out at church.  One year for Christmas I got a 3 foot statue of St. Isidore for Jimmy.  He has lived all over our house but … [Read more…]

The Pity Train is Pulling into the Station

July 8, 2016 by cynelder@me.com

The pity train is pulling into the station and I’m going to get off.  I’m done with it.  I can’t say that the ride has been fun but at least it has been short.  I’m ready to put away the chocolate chips (and save them for the next time I want to bake cookies) and … [Read more…]

Let’s Get the Horses Up

July 6, 2016 by cynelder@me.com

We have horses.  We have beautiful horses.  They’re draft horses.  Jimmy always said that if he sold the milk cows he was going to get horses.  And he did.  We got a team of sisters, a pair.  They were a year a part.  They were part haflinger and part Pershing.  They were brown with black … [Read more…]

It’s Five O’clock This Morning

June 29, 2016 by cynelder@me.com

“It’s five o’clock this morning and the sun is on the rise.” This is a song on the soundtrack of my life.  I learned it in high school, yes I’m a huge John Denver fan, and we would sing it on our way to Speech and Debate events because we always had to head out … [Read more…]

Attacked by a Pack

June 16, 2016 by cynelder@me.com

I had to run to Fancy Farm earlier tonite.  I had to get some more milk for my visiting grandson.  It was going to be a quick trip.  Anyway, Jimmy and John were on the tractor and gator going up to start mowing some grass hay.  I told Jimmy not to because we had gotten … [Read more…]

I’ll Have Pie With That

June 13, 2016 by cynelder@me.com

Have you ever gone out to eat only so you can order dessert?  You too?  I have seriously gone into a restaurant and asked them if they had any carrot cake before I ordered.  You see, if there was carrot cake then I would get something sensible for lunch because I knew I would have … [Read more…]

Sisters in Heart

June 10, 2016 by cynelder@me.com

This past weekend I went home again.  Don’t get me wrong, I’ve gone home many times before.  After all, my sister lives in our family home.  But last weekend has really taken me again.  Last weekend was set aside for my high school reunion.  I never was one for reunions.  I like family reunions fine, … [Read more…]

When I Grow Up

June 3, 2016 by cynelder@me.com

If I’ve written about this before, please forgive me. I made the mistake the other day to tell my son that when I grow up I’m going to …  He came back to me and said “when you grow up?”  I need to give him a break.  He’s only 15.  He hasn’t heard me say … [Read more…]

Commencement

May 20, 2016 by cynelder@me.com

Today, my youngest daughter graduates from high school.  You know her, Katie Elder.  Everyone knows and loves Katie.  And I wanted so much to talk about the woman she has become but it just seems that I prefer to talk about graduating. On this same date, 40 years ago exactly, it was a Friday as … [Read more…]

Twister

May 16, 2016 by cynelder@me.com

Back in 1974, right after I got my driver’s license, I was sitting up in my room, pouting.  I did a lot of pouting then.  I was mad at my mother because I was supposed to babysit that night and I wanted to drive.  It was a new family for me and Mom wanted to … [Read more…]
