Today marks the longest day of the year and the beginning of the season of summer. I love all seasons for what they have to offer but none more so than summer. Summer is the season of growth, of love and of warmth.
It is also the season of Mother Nature. There is no denying that she is thriving in the wind, the green of the fields, the rain, and the warmth of the sun. And even though things tend to cross in our world, Mother Nature is a product of the other Son. It is only through the Holy Trinity that she is allowed to control the wind and the sun and the rain. And these are the reasons that things grow, including you and me.
The Summer Solstice is the beginning of a new time of the year. This is the time we get serious about our lives. Kids are out of school, vacations are being taken, sweet corn and tomatoes are ripening, life is so chaotic but has the potential for so much fun. At the end of every day, we wash the dirt and sweat off of the kids and ourselves, and smile as they sleep under that low-lying moon.
At the Summer Solstice, we can enter the light, literally. The sun begins to shine in the middle of the night and sometimes is still in the sky at bedtime. In the summer the sky lights up with lightening bugs and millions of stars. I remember lying on my kids’ trampoline at midnight just enthralled with the night sky. I remember camping and counting the stars, or trying to, and being fooled by an airplane shooting across the night sky.
And because this is a time of new beginnings you can begin again. You can ask Mother Nature, and our Lord Jesus Christ, to lead you out of the darkness and into the light. You can ask for help to achieve the person you are meant to be. There is a potential for you to claim the energy you deserve and whether you light your path with lightening bugs, or the sun, or star-shine, this is the time to step out of the shadows, to leave the shade, and to feel God’s love on your face as He guides you to where you were meant to be. This is a time to reach for and accept the growth of Mother Nature to expand, knowing that she and our Lord, the Trinity, will support you every step of the way.
So, take a deep breath, raise your face to the sun, and appreciate what it is that you’ve been given and all that is to come. Ask God for healing and thank Him for all that you will find on your path.
And I hope that path includes some home-grown tomatoes.
